Looking at the moon

This research has been carried out in collaboration with Towel Studio and looks at the relationship between the moon and architecture.

Moonlight studies

We decided to track the moon in relation to a project we were carrying out in Kent. We tracked where you will see a full moon from within the home and designed spaces and window locations around this.

We also tracked moonlight and designed spaces to allow for special moonlight moments such as having a bath in moonlight on New Years Eve.

In this study we carried out research into geographical moon features that can be seen through a microscope. We found that there is a certain day in a month where it is optimal to see these features through a telescope on earth. We tracked when these moments will happen when looking through a specific window seat in the home we were designing, we then created a schedule which highlighted the best days to view the moon through the window up to the year 2043.

We created a 3D model of the proposal and surrounding context to understand the full moon visual opportunities from the home. Initially we specifically looked at the month of December.

When deciding where to put new windows and roof lights, we also looked for moments where a full moon will perfectly illuminate a space through an opening taking into account the exact angle of the moon.

Part of the research was trying to understand how we can represent the ideas we were exploring. We looked at a variety of visual representation and leaflets explaining some of the concepts.

The next phase of this research will be to experience and record these special moonlight moments over time when the project is complete.
